A Forest Datum

A forest structure built by the previous cohort. It ran two regimes side by side: a deck of standardised cells, with crown forks high-pruned at 20 to 50 mm diameter and cut to a standardised cell by a jig, carried on five supports, each worked as a single piece. Only the standardised half is on record. The project's only peer-reviewed account describes the deck and mentions neither the supports, their charring, nor any reclaimed timber.
The five supports are Woodchip Barn forks, reconnected to their 2016 identity by matching the in-situ models against the 2016 geometry and cross-checking against the published elevations of the 25. Why these five pieces were chosen, how much was trimmed, and when and how they were charred and joined is not recoverable.
A Forest Datum is described as designed for disassembly and reuse. The supports fall outside that description: if it is dismantled they will emerge as five worked pieces with no record of the work.
