| Node | What is known | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Woodchip Barn, enclosure posts | Identified from the project information after retrieval | Reconstructed from photographs or remains |
| Dismantling | Nothing was recorded: not how many posts came back, not where they were stacked | Done but not recorded |
| Lying near the old Woodchip Barn site, by the sawmill shelter | Location learned from the tutor and the forester | Reported, unverified |

Condition
- Dimensions and geometry
- Posts alike in section, one building; lamella sizes set by the glulam layoutMMeasured
- Moisture content
- Stable under sheeting in the open; no kiln drying needed before useNot yet recordedTo be supplied by: Zhirui ZhangMMeasured
- Rot and defects
Rot had begun at the screw holes, mortise pockets and bolt openings and spread outwards. Some posts carried little rot and a few small buried screws; the rest had at least one face crowded with screws, rotted mortise remains and old cladding fragments. Slicing showed for the first time how far the decay ran.
EObserved by eye- Visual assessment
Observed by eye. Each lamella was cleared a second time after slicing: rot, breakage and cracks cut back to the layout's dimensions.

Processing
- Basis
- Location given by the tutor and the forester
- What changed
- Posts moved from beside the old Woodchip Barn site to campus
- Result
- Batch on site
- Basis
- Exposed screws concentrated on one face and all of one model, so a sample stood for the rest
- What changed
- Cuboid blocks taken out around sampled screws
- Result
- Depth the screws ran, how far rot had travelled along them, and the sound wood beyond; a removal thickness
- Basis
- Removal thickness from e02, marked along each post with redundancy; detector run along the line first
- What changed
- One thickness taken off each fouled post
- Result
- Metal and rot cleared from that face
- Basis
- Detector gave a rough position, a drill bit found the start by sound, a hole saw showed the direction
- What changed
- Buried and distributed screws taken out with the surrounding rotten wood
- Result
- Stock safe for the saw blade; detector re-checked after
- Basis
- Direction settled against the glulam layout: a post yields wider lamellae or more of them, not both
- What changed
- Posts became lamellae
- Result
- Lamellae to the layout's sizes
- Basis
- By eye, against the layout's dimensions
- What changed
- Rot, breakage and cracks cut back on each lamella
- Result
- Lamellae within the layout's dimensions
- Basis
- Posts came from one building, alike in section, and fell short of the width parts of the layout called for
- What changed
- Wider layers, among them the top members of the glulam side panels, split down their length and jointed
- Result
- Grain continuity intact, the split being along the grain
- Basis
- A lamella long enough but locally broken, often at an old mortise
- What changed
- Damaged length replaced
- Result
- Scarf joint in a low-stress zone
- Basis
- Remaining salvaged stock too narrow for the widest layers, the first cell being complete
- What changed
- New timber entered the batch
- Result
- Quantity of the new timber was not recorded, so the yield and the timber used per module cannot be worked out
- Basis
- Glulam stock layout, adjusted to what this batch could provide
- What changed
- Layers laid up and glued
- Result
- Layup map: salvaged layers, jointed pairs, scarf repairs, and where the new timber begins
Annotation

Model
What this piece has been
Enclosure posts of the Woodchip Barn until it was dismantled; then a pile of single pieces beside the old site; then the main stock of the first Wood Store cell. Gluing makes the lamellae one piece, and salvaged and new timber leave the planer looking similar, so the layup map drawn while the layers were on the bench is what marks the salvaged layers, the jointed pairs, the scarf repairs, and the point where the new timber begins.
